James Vincent Forrestal was an American banker and politician who served as the first United States Secretary of Defense in the administration of Harry S. Truman. In 1947, after the war, he was appointed as the first Secretary of the newly created Department of Defense at the direction of President Harry S. Truman. Forrestal was hostile to the Soviet Union, fearing a spread of communism across Europe and the Middle East. Along with Secretary of State George C. Marshall, he strongly opposed United States support for the creation of the State of Israel, fearing it would alienate Arab nations that were needed as allies and whose oil reserves were vital for civil and military industrial expansion.

Forrestal supported the idea of using supercarriers as the centerpiece of naval battle groups. He tried to weaken the proposed Department of Defense in favor of the Navy, but had difficulty managing it from 1947 to 1949 after President Truman appointed him Secretary of Defense. The two men did not get along and often disagreed; in the end, Truman forced Forrestal to resign. His mental health deteriorated rapidly and he received medical treatment for depression. However, Forrestal died after falling from a sixteenth-floor window of the Bethesda Naval Hospital. Several biographers describe his death as a suicide, although rumors and conspiracy theories alleging that Forrestal was assassinated by the United States government persist to this day.
