About
James Abram Garfield was an American lawyer, professor, military officer and politician who became President of the United States in March 1881. Born into a poor family in northeastern Ohio, he graduated from Williams College, practiced law and served as a Union officer in the Civil War, fighting in engagements such as Middle Creek, Shiloh and Chickamauga. Elected to Congress in 1862, he earned a reputation as an orator and an advocate for the gold standard.
In the postwar years Garfield moved from Radical Republican positions to more moderate stances on Reconstruction, supporting civil rights for African Americans and promoting broader access to education. His nomination for the presidency in 1880 resulted from a deal between party factions; during his short administration he sought to curb the patronage system, fight corruption in the Post Office and reassert executive authority vis‑à‑vis the Senate.
In July 1881 he was shot by a disgruntled attacker and died in September from complications of the wound. His assassination hastened debates over civil service reform; proposals he had supported led after his death to reform measures approved by Congress. For a time his rise from a poor home to the Presidency was invoked as a symbol of the American ideal of upward mobility.
