About

James Lawton Collins Jr. was an officer of the United States Army whose career spanned World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. As commander of the 957th Field Artillery Battalion, he landed in Normandy in June 1944 and took part in operations such as Cobra, Aachen, and the Bulge; he was awarded the Silver Star, Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Purple Heart, and the French Croix de Guerre. After the war he served in intelligence and teaching roles, including instructor at the Command and General Staff College and studies at the Naval War College.

Fluent in several languages, Collins headed the Army Language School and was the first director of the Defense Language Institute, in addition to serving on military assistance missions in London, at SHAPE, and as artillery commander of V Corps in Germany. In Vietnam, he served as special assistant to the commander of American forces and held senior positions in military intelligence.

Retiring as a brigadier general in 1969, he was recalled to lead the Army’s Historical Office, supervising and producing works on contemporary conflicts and World War II. His books include studies on Korea and Vietnam and encyclopedic works on D-Day, consolidating his reputation as a soldier and military historian.
