About

James Watt was a Scottish mathematician and engineer whose improvements to the steam engine marked a turning point in the Industrial Revolution. A maker of scientific instruments, he became known for introducing the separate condenser and other modifications that made steam engines far more efficient, enabling the conversion of reciprocal motion into useful rotary motion for factories and mines.

He formed a decisive partnership with Matthew Boulton (Boulton & Watt), which provided funding, manufacture, and large‑scale installation of the engines; cooperation with John Wilkinson on cylinder precision was also crucial to their technical success. Watt worked with support from professors at the University of Glasgow and developed a routine of research and prototyping that led to practical applications from the 1770s onward.

Beyond the invention itself, his work as a manufacturer and entrepreneur helped spread the technology, establish foundries, and standardize industrial processes. As an influential member of the Lunar Society, he left a technical and documentary legacy — many of his papers are preserved in libraries — and profoundly influenced mechanization and industrialization in Great Britain.
