About
Jan Sterling (born Jane Sterling Adriance) was an American film, television and stage actress, active mainly in the 1940s and 1950s. Trained on Broadway and a member of the Actors Studio before her film career, she became known for playing tough, determined women, earning critical notice for many of her performances.
Her recognition included award nominations and wins: she was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress and won a Golden Globe for her role in The High and the Mighty (1954). Among her most remembered work is the opportunistic wife in Ace in the Hole (1951), directed by Billy Wilder, widely regarded as one of her finest performances.
Alternating between film and television, she appeared in titles such as Johnny Belinda (1948), Caged (1950), Mystery Street (1950) and High School Confidential (1958), and had recurring appearances in TV series and anthology shows. From the 1960s her screen career declined, but she remained active in the theatre and made occasional returns to television and film in later decades.
Her legacy is that of a powerful postwar Hollywood character actress whose portrayals of complex women helped broaden the range of female roles in that era.
