Jane Avril

About

Jane Avril, born Jeanne Louise Beaudon, was a French dancer whose career at the end of the 19th century became entwined with the cultural image of Paris’s Belle Époque. Emerging from a difficult childhood and periods in hospitals and precarious work, she established herself as a central figure in the cabarets by performing at the Moulin Rouge and the Jardin de Paris, where she became known for a singular style — nervous, contorted movements that made her famous and earned her nicknames such as La Mélinite and Jane la Folle.

Her renown grew through a close association with the painter Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, who depicted her in posters and paintings, projecting her beyond the confines of nightclubs and helping to secure her international reputation; she even traveled with a troupe to London in 1896. Unlike many dancers of the period, Avril often performed solo and was celebrated for a melancholic elegance that critics and artists likened to classical imagery.

From 1901 she expanded into the theatre and in 1905 withdrew from the stage. She married the artist Maurice Biais in 1911, who adopted her son. The final years of her life were marked by financial hardship; she died in 1943 in relative obscurity, yet left a lasting legacy as an icon of Parisian nightlife and a muse to the artists of her time.
