About

Janis Ian is an American singer, songwriter and author whose career rose to prominence in the 1960s and 1970s. She became known as a teenager with the controversial single "Society's Child," a pioneering song about an interracial romance that drew national attention and entered the era's folk repertoire. Her most significant commercial success came in 1975 with "At Seventeen," an autobiographical song about teenage cruelty that earned her a Grammy and helped place the album Between the Lines at the top of the charts.

Throughout her career Ian worked in folk, pop and international productions, achieving hits and awards outside the United States as well; she maintained notable popularity in Japan and in several European markets. In addition to music, she worked as a columnist and published fiction, including works recognized by the cultural industry. In 1992 she founded her own record label and publishing company, Rude Girl Records, to manage her catalog and releases.

Janis Ian's career is characterized both by socially engaged songs and by artistic resilience: she continued recording, reissuing and promoting her repertoire over the decades, building a legacy of influence among later songwriters and performers.
