About

Janis Paige, born Donna Mae Tjaden, was an American actress and singer whose professional career spanned nearly six decades, making her one of the last surviving stars of Hollywood’s Golden Age. Trained in singing and known for her strong presence in musicals, she began performing at the Hollywood Canteen during World War II, which led to a film contract and early appearances in studio musicals.

Dissatisfied with the limited film roles she was offered, she moved into theatre, where she found major success on Broadway—most notably as Babe in The Pajama Game (1954)—and in national tours of nightclub and classic musical productions. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s she alternated between film, stage, and television, starring in the sitcom It’s Always Jan and appearing in popular series and TV movies.

Her versatility allowed her to take on comedies as well as occasional dramatic roles, and she frequently served as a replacement or reinterpreted leading parts in high-profile productions such as Mame. Honored by the industry with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (1960), she is remembered as a musical performer and as a figure who bridged the studio-film era and the American stage.
