About

Jay R. Smith was an American child actor known for his appearances in the Our Gang series during the silent era. He joined the cast in 1925, debuting in Boys Will Be Joys, and replaced Mickey Daniels in the role of the freckle-faced boy, remaining with the series until the end of the silent period. He also appeared as himself in the short 45 Minutes from Hollywood (1926).

Under studio pressure, he agreed to appear in Moan and Groan, Inc. (1929), the series’ sixth sound production, but he was unhappy with his performance and feared he would not prosper in the transition to sound, which led him to abandon his acting career in 1929.

In adulthood he left the film business and went into the retail paint trade, settling in Kailua, Hawaii, and later retiring to Las Vegas. His life ended tragically: he was found dead in the desert near Las Vegas in October 2002, a crime for which an acquaintance was sentenced to life imprisonment.

His legacy remains tied to Our Gang’s silent period, remembered by fans of children’s cinema as one of the performers of that historical phase.
