About

John Davison “Jay” Rockefeller IV is an American politician affiliated with the Democratic Party, with a long public career in West Virginia. From the influential Rockefeller family, he moved to the state in 1964 for volunteer work and began his electoral career in the state House of Delegates, later serving as Secretary of State and president of West Virginia Wesleyan College before being elected governor for two terms (1977–1985) during a period of severe local economic crisis.

Elected to the Senate in 1984, Rockefeller served five terms until 2015, holding key positions on committees such as Finance, Commerce, Science and Transportation, and Veterans’ Affairs, and chairing the Intelligence Committee. He became a prominent voice on health policy, working to modernize Medicare, expand children's access to health care, and create the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP); he also provided crucial support to the debates that led to passage of the Affordable Care Act.

On veterans’ issues, he focused on research and treatment of service-related illnesses and on reforms to the Department of Veterans Affairs health system. He is notable as the only member of his family to hold office as a Democrat, leaving a legacy tied to defending public health and veterans’ rights at the federal level.
