About

Jean-Claude Brialy was a French actor and director who became one of the central figures of the Nouvelle Vague from the late 1950s. Prolific in film, he appeared in key works directed by Claude Chabrol, Jean-Luc Godard, François Truffaut, Éric Rohmer and Louis Malle, establishing himself both as a versatile performer and as a recurring presence in the films that renewed French cinema.

In addition to his acting career, Brialy directed several films, including Églantine (1971), and maintained an ongoing stage career, with a repertoire ranging from Georges Feydeau to contemporary plays. His filmography includes internationally recognized titles such as Les Cousins, Les Quatre Cents Coups and Le Genou de Claire, as well as collaborations with directors from different generations.

Over the course of his career he received critical recognition and awards, including the César for Best Supporting Actor for Les Innocents (1987). A prominent public figure, Brialy left a legacy tied to aesthetic renewal and to the dialogue between auteur cinema and the wider postwar French audience.
