About

Jean d’Ormesson was a French writer whose work spans novels, chronicles, essays and screenplays, establishing him as a central figure in France’s twentieth‑century literary and intellectual life. Trained in Letters and History at the École Normale Supérieure, he also worked as a philosophy teacher, editor and newspaper director — serving as director of Le Figaro in the 1970s — and had an extensive institutional career, including roles at UNESCO, where he held leadership positions between the 1950s and 1990s.

He became a member of the Académie française in 1973, occupying seat 12, and later served as the academy’s dean. d’Ormesson’s literary output blends memoir, reflections on creativity and the history of literature, with notable works such as La Gloire de l’Empire, which won the Grand Prix du Roman of the Académie française in 1971, alongside other prizewinning and widely translated books.

Known for an ironic and elegiac style, he received honors including the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honour and foreign prizes for his lifetime’s work. His legacy endures in his influence on readers and writers, his participation in cultural institutions, and his promotion of dialogue between literature, philosophy and public life.
