About

Jeanne Rozerot was a French seamstress known for her relationship with the writer Émile Zola, from which his two only children were born. Of modest origins—daughter of an ouvrier agricole and having lost her mother—she moved to Paris to work and was hired as a seamstress by Zola’s wife in 1888. From that meeting she became the author’s mistress and a central figure in his private and family life in the years that followed.

Despite the marital tensions the relationship caused, Jeanne played a lasting role: Zola provided residences near Médan for her and the children, and maintained a close connection with them, even documenting family scenes in photographs. The children Denise and Jacques, born out of wedlock, later received the name Émile‑Zola by judicial decisions and presidential decrees after their father’s death.

The shared domestic arrangement among Zola, his wife Alexandrine and Jeanne caused suffering and remained marked by secrecy and obligations. After Jeanne’s death in 1914, her connection to Zola remained notable in public memory; the house in Verneuil‑sur‑Seine associated with this circle has been recently restored and appears in heritage records.
