Jeanne Samary

Jeanne Samary was a French actress associated with the Comédie-Française, where she began her career young after training at the Conservatoire national. She became a sociétaire in 1878 and was noted for soubrette and servant roles in the repertories of Molière and 19th-century playwrights, performing characters such as Dorine (Tartuffe), Lisette (L'École des maris) and Nicole (Le Bourgeois gentilhomme). Her steady work at the official theatre made her well known to Parisian audiences of the time.

Alongside her stage career, Samary was a muse for Impressionist painters, most notably Pierre-Auguste Renoir, who painted her in several canvases between 1877 and 1880, including pieces shown at the Impressionist salons such as La Balançoire and other works that have since acquired great historical significance. That association with painting contributed to her public image and to the visibility of the period’s artistic experiments.

In addition to acting and being the subject of portraits, she wrote an illustrated work for her children shortly before she died. Her career reflects the intertwining of theatre and the visual arts in late 19th-century Paris, leaving a mark both in art collections and in the memory of the French dramatic repertory.
