About

Jim Bakken is a former professional American football player, acknowledged as one of the top kickers of the 1960s and 1970s. He spent 17 seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals, compiled 1,380 career points, registered a streak of 234 consecutive successful kicks, and retired among the league’s all-time leading scorers. He was selected to the Pro Bowl four times and named to the teams of the decade for the 1960s and 1970s.

Before turning professional, he excelled in college football at Wisconsin, led the Big Ten in punt average, and served as co-captain in 1961; he also played college baseball. In the NFL he led the league in field goals made in 1964 and 1967 and was the Cardinals’ leading scorer in several seasons, earning the team’s MVP honor in 1976.

Off the field, Bakken served as president of the NFLPA in 1969 and left institutional marks: a college trophy for the best kicker was co-named in his honor, and he is a member of the St. Louis Sports Hall of Fame. After his playing career he worked in administrative roles in collegiate athletics and continued competitive involvement in masters handball in Wisconsin.
