About

Johan Collett Müller Borgen was a Norwegian writer, journalist and critic whose work shaped twentieth‑century Norwegian literature. He worked for decades in cultural journalism, notably at Dagbladet, where he wrote satirical columns under the pseudonym "Mumle Gåsegg," and later edited the literary magazine Vinduet, establishing himself as a leading critical voice and opinion‑maker.

As a fiction writer, his artistic breakthrough came with the short‑story collection Hvetebrødsdager (1948), and he achieved wide recognition with the semi‑autobiographical novel Lillelord (1955), the first volume of a trilogy that examines identity and social tensions. For his work he received major awards, including the Norwegian Critics Prize for Literature and the Nordic Council's Literature Prize.

During the Nazi occupation of Norway, Borgen was notable for his intellectual resistance: he wrote articles critical of the regime, was imprisoned at Grini, escaped and continued clandestine activities until temporarily going into exile in Sweden. After the war he worked in the theater as an instructor and retained a lasting influence as an author and critic.

His legacy includes a varied body of work—novels, short stories, translations and essays—and a central role in Norway's literary scene, as well as having inspired later generations of writers.
