About

Johannes Brahms was a German composer, pianist and conductor of the mid-Romantic period whose work reconciled Romantic expressiveness with classical formal rigor. Trained in Hamburg’s musical scene, he made an early debut as a pianist and, as an adult, settled in Vienna, where he spent most of his career and established his reputation. He collaborated with leading performers of his time, such as Clara Schumann and Joseph Joachim, and substantial portions of the chamber and piano repertoire arose from those partnerships.

His output covered almost every instrumental and choral form except opera and ballet: symphonies, concertos, chamber music, lieder, choral works and pieces for piano and clarinet. A German Requiem (1868) and the First Symphony (1876) were decisive milestones in his public recognition; his Hungarian Dances and the late works for clarinet rank among his particularly notable creations.

Regarded by some contemporaries as a conservative, Brahms influenced later generations—from Schoenberg to Elgar—through his formal construction and wealth of thematic development. He lived modestly, devoted himself to editing and recitals, and left a lasting legacy as one of the pillars of nineteenth-century concert music.
