About

John Agar was an American actor active mainly from the 1940s through the 1970s, known for roles alongside John Wayne in classics such as Sands of Iwo Jima, Fort Apache and She Wore a Yellow Ribbon. Early in his career he benefited from support by studios like RKO and from a contract provided by David O. Selznick, which led him to star in higher-profile productions.

After Shirley Temple's divorce and personal problems that harmed his reputation with major studios, Agar established himself as a leading man in low-budget films, specializing in science fiction, westerns and horror. Titles such as Tarantula!, The Mole People, The Brain from Planet Arous and Revenge of the Creature made him a recurring presence in genre cinema of the 1950s and 1960s.

Throughout his career he maintained occasional collaborations with John Wayne and moved between film and television, appearing in both studio productions and works by B-movie directors. His legacy is that of an actor who worked in both major productions and cult films, leaving a particular mark on fantasy cinema and the B-movie scene of the period.
