About

John B. Goodenough was a materials scientist and solid-state physicist whose work laid essential foundations for modern rechargeable batteries. A professor at the University of Texas at Austin, he became known for his study of transition-metal oxides, investigating magnetism, metal–insulator transitions, and electronic transport in perovskites. The rules he developed with Junjiro Kanamori explain magnetic interactions via superexchange and influenced research on materials for high-temperature superconductivity.

Goodenough is widely recognized for his contributions to the development of electrodes for lithium-ion batteries; key work in the 1970s and 1990s identified cathode materials and phosphate olivines that increased battery energy density and safety. In 2019 he received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, at age 97, for this central role in energy storage technology.

Over his career he served as a consultant on energy storage projects and research consortia and received awards such as the Japan Prize, the National Medal of Science, and election as a foreign member of the Royal Society. His legacy rests both in foundational technical papers and books and in the broad practical application of his discoveries in portable electronics and electric vehicles.
