John Gregory Bettis is an American lyricist and songwriter whose repertoire accounts for more than 250 million records sold, with songs recorded by major artists of the late twentieth century. His career spans multiple genres—from pop to country—and includes long-lasting collaborations that shaped popular culture.

Bettis is widely known for his partnership with Richard Carpenter, responsible for hits such as "Top of the World," "Yesterday Once More," "Only Yesterday," and "Goodbye to Love," songs central to The Carpenters' commercial and artistic success. Outside that circle, he wrote hits for artists including Michael Jackson ("Human Nature"), Whitney Houston ("One Moment in Time"), Madonna ("Crazy for You"), the Pointer Sisters ("Slow Hand") and George Strait ("Heartland").

His output includes more than a thousand lyrics, film scores and television themes, and has been honored with two Emmy Awards, as well as nominations for an Academy Award, a Golden Globe and several Grammys.
