About

John Herbert Dillinger was a notorious American bank robber whose criminal career and spectacular escapes during 1933–1934 made him a central figure in the press and public imagination of the Great Depression. Nicknamed “Jackrabbit” for the speed of his actions, he joined gangs that carried out bold robberies across several states, attracting great notoriety and much of the law-enforcement attention of the time.

Released from prison in 1933, Dillinger established himself as a leader of crews that included names such as Harry Pierpont, Homer Van Meter and “Baby Face” Nelson. His methods — disguises, staged ruses and dramatic getaways, including the famous escape from Crown Point using a gun carved from soap — fueled both folklore and federal investigative efforts.

The manhunt for Dillinger coincided with the professionalization of the FBI and the media label “public enemies” applied to 1930s gangsters. In July 1934 he was shot and killed by agents after leaving a movie theater in Chicago; the operation and the figure of his alleged informant spawned legends such as that of the “Lady in Red.”

Dillinger’s case influenced popular culture and collective memory: it inspired films, books and songs, and remains a symbol of the social and criminal tensions of that era.
