About

An American actor of stage, film, and television, John McMartin had a career spanning more than five decades on Broadway and the off-Broadway scene. Emerging in 1959, he earned awards and nominations — including the Theatre World Award and a Tony nomination for Sweet Charity — and took part in premieres and central roles in notable musicals and plays such as Follies, A Little Night Music, Into the Woods, and Grey Gardens.

In regional theatre and during seasons with the New Phoenix Repertory Company, he performed works by classical and modern authors from O’Neill to Stoppard, establishing himself as a versatile interpreter in both dramatic and musical repertoire. His collaborations with prominent composers and playwrights produced memorable songs and characters, notably Benjamin Stone in Follies.

He also worked regularly in television and film, with appearances in popular series and movies such as All the President’s Men, Blow Out, and Legal Eagles, which broadened his visibility beyond the stage. In 2009 he was honored with induction into the American Theater Hall of Fame, a sign of the influence and legacy of his long theatrical career.
