About

John Inglis Young, known professionally as John Paul Young, is a pop singer born in Scotland who settled in Australia and whose career reached international prominence in the 1970s. His name is associated with the global hit of 1978, "Love Is in the Air," and a string of hits that placed on the charts in Germany, the Netherlands and South Africa, as well as number-one singles such as "I Hate the Music" (1976) and "Yesterday's Hero" (1975).

Young’s career blends theatre and television: he appeared in major Australian musical theatre productions — including Jesus Christ Superstar — and gained wider exposure through regular appearances on the television program Countdown, a key outlet for local pop music between 1974 and 1987. His work with producers and songwriters Harry Vanda and George Young, a leading figure at the Albert Productions label, was decisive for his early successes.

Honoured by the industry, John Paul Young was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2009. His legacy is marked both by songs that became part of Australian pop culture and by the role he played in spreading the Australian pop/rock sound abroad during the 1970s.
