About

John Sculley is an American executive and investor known for his marketing and management work in the technology and consumer goods sectors. He rose to prominence as a vice president and later president of PepsiCo, where he led notable campaigns — such as the “Pepsi Challenge” — and helped expand the company’s market share through consumer research and aggressive advertising investment.

In 1983 he was hired as CEO of Apple, bringing his marketing expertise to the personal computer market. During his tenure the company’s sales grew substantially, with revenues rising from hundreds of millions to billions of dollars, and important products were launched, including the Macintosh, the PowerBook and System 7.

His leadership was also marked by internal controversy, most notably the conflict with Steve Jobs that led to Jobs’s departure in 1985, as well as strategic decisions that drew criticism over the company’s subsequent performance and its competition with IBM. After leaving Apple, Sculley became a partner in Sculley Brothers and worked as an investor in technology startups.
