About
John Hoyer Updike was one of the most important American writers of the postwar period, working as a novelist, short‑story writer, poet and critic. A Harvard graduate who spent an academic year at Oxford, he began his career contributing to The New Yorker, where his stories, poems and reviews established his name in the literary world.
His breakthrough came with the Rabbit series, which follows the life of Harry “Rabbit” Angstrom over more than three decades; the tetralogy earned Updike two Pulitzer Prizes and cemented his reputation as a keen observer of changes in American society. At the same time he wrote widely read novels such as The Witches of Eastwick, adapted for film, and works that probe faith and technology, like Roger’s Version.
His output includes twelve books of fiction, several volumes of poetry, essays and art criticism, as well as a play. Praised for his precise prose and attention to everyday detail, Updike left a lasting mark on contemporary Anglo‑American literature.
