About

Jonathan Richman is an American singer, songwriter, and guitarist whose work influenced garage rock and proto‑punk. He founded the band The Modern Lovers in the early 1970s and wrote songs that became touchstones of the genre, such as “Roadrunner” and “Pablo Picasso,” which appear on the self‑titled album released in 1976. That repertoire early attracted critical attention and cover versions, expanding his international reputation.

After the breakup of the classic Modern Lovers lineup, Richman pursued a solo career and led various incarnations of the group, shifting from raw rock to a more acoustic sound with touches of doo‑wop, country, and Latin rhythms. In the 1970s and 1980s he recorded for labels such as Beserkley and Rounder, achieving particular success in Europe and maintaining a devoted fan base.

In addition to a prolific recording output, Richman gained cultural visibility through film soundtracks and television appearances, and with songs that reached young audiences. His performing style—sometimes naive and eccentric—coexists with a clear compositional skill, leaving a lasting mark on alternative rock and the independent scene.
