About

José Figueres Ferrer was a central political leader in modern Costa Rican history, serving as president on three occasions. Born to a family of Catalan immigrants, he became known as a coffee grower and entrepreneur before taking on military and political leadership in the 1948 conflict, which brought him to head a provisional junta.

During that initial interregnum he implemented far‑reaching structural changes: he abolished the armed forces, established universal public education, extended the franchise to women and the illiterate, wrote a new constitution, and promoted extensive social‑welfare legislation. These measures reshaped the country’s civic and institutional life.

A founding figure of the National Liberation Party (PLN), Figueres also nationalized the banking system and pushed industrialization and infrastructure works, including sections of the Pan‑American Highway. His actions helped consolidate the middle class and gave Costa Rica a distinctive democratic and social profile within Central America.

Recognized as the country’s principal political reference in the twentieth century, his legacy is debated by historians but remains inseparable from the reforms that shaped contemporary Costa Rica.
