About

José Santos Chocano was a Peruvian poet prominent in Hispanic‑American modernism, known by the nickname “El Cantor de América.” His work focuses on an epic, panoramic representation of Peru and Latin America, combining verbal exuberance with national and continental themes that earned him wide recognition among contemporary readers and critics.

Educated in letters while still a teenager, Chocano’s career was marked by intense public and diplomatic activity—traveling and serving in various countries—and by political entanglements that placed him in controversial positions, including associations with military figures and rulers in the region. That turbulent life shaped both his public image and the subjects of his poetry.

His output includes collections and poems that circulated widely in periodicals and books at the turn of the 20th century; because of his role in modernism, he is often mentioned alongside other important Latin American figures of the movement. His personal life was also tumultuous: he was involved in a fatal duel and met a tragic end when he was murdered in Santiago, Chile.

Chocano remains an important figure for studies of Latin American literary identity and for the consolidation of an epic‑national strain in Spanish‑language poetry of his time.
