About

Joseph "Erap" Estrada, born José Marcelo Ejército, is a public figure in the Philippines whose career combines entertainment and politics. Before entering politics, he became widely popular as an actor, starring in more than a hundred films over three decades and cultivating a persona as a man of the people that later underpinned his electoral appeal.

He held both local and national offices: he served multiple terms as mayor of San Juan (1969–1986), was a senator (1987–1992) and vice president (1992–1998). In 1998 he was elected the 13th president of the Philippines, a post he held until 2001. His administration included military actions against Muslim rebel groups, but it was overshadowed by corruption allegations that led to an impeachment process and his ouster during the uprising known as People Power 2.

After facing legal charges and a conviction for corruption that was later commuted by a pardon, Estrada returned to municipal politics, serving as mayor of Manila from 2013 to 2019. His career leaves a complex legacy: sustained personal popularity and political influence alongside judicial controversies and questions over corruption.
