About

Joseph Pulitzer III was a prominent American newspaper executive and philanthropist from the family that lent its name to the prestigious journalism prize. As publisher of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch for 38 years (and president of the Pulitzer Publishing Company from 1955 to 1993), he led the paper through the major social and political upheavals of the twentieth century while maintaining the liberal orientation inherited from his grandfather. Under his leadership, the Post-Dispatch was among the first publications to take a stand against the Vietnam War.

Pulitzer also played a central role in the administration of the Pulitzer Prize itself: he chaired the board responsible for selecting winners for 31 years and oversaw, in the 1970s, the transformation of that body into the principal authority in awarding the prizes. He was the last direct family member to participate in the selection process.

Beyond journalism, he was known as a collector of contemporary art, assembling a collection regarded as one of the most important of his time; gifts from his collection benefited cultural institutions. He received, among other honors, an honorary Doctor of Laws from Washington University in St. Louis.
