About

Joshua Lederberg was a prominent American molecular biologist and geneticist, best known for his pioneering contributions to bacterial genetics. His work showed that bacteria such as Escherichia coli can exchange genetic material by conjugation, and later clarified mechanisms of transfer via viral transduction—discoveries that transformed understanding of bacterial variation and antibiotic resistance.

Awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1958, Lederberg also served as a professor and mentor to generations at the University of Wisconsin–Madison and Rockefeller University. His collaborations with figures like Edward Tatum and his scientific partnership with Esther Lederberg were central to the development of microbial genetics in the 1940s and 1950s.

Beyond his experimental contributions, Lederberg coined the term astrobiology and was a member of influential scientific bodies, including the Pontifical Academy of Sciences. His legacy endures in the conceptual and methodological foundations of modern microbial genetics and in the clinical and epidemiological applications that followed from his discoveries.
