About

Julie Newmar is an American actress, dancer and singer whose career spans film, theatre and television. Trained in dance numbers and choreography at the Universal studios, she performed in musicals and films in the 1950s before achieving recognition on Broadway. In 1958 she won the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress for her performance in The Marriage-Go-Round, a role she reprised in the 1961 film adaptation.

Her popular notoriety grew in the 1960s when she played Catwoman on the television series Batman, a role that gave her cultural-icon status and made her a sex symbol; she revisited the character decades later in voice roles for animated Batman productions. She is also credited with inventing a style of nylon pantyhose, a lesser-known aspect of her work offstage.

In her personal life she became active in social causes; she emerged as a supporter of LGBT rights and faced health challenges in recent years. Julie Newmar’s legacy remains tied to her award-winning theatre work and the emblematic image of Catwoman in pop culture.
