About

Karl August Leopold Böhm was an Austrian conductor, considered one of the leading figures in post-war classical music. He was a specialist in the works of Strauss, Wagner, and Mozart.

In 1913, Böhm went to study music with Eusebius Mandyczewski, archivist of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde (Society of the Friends of Music), and a friend of Johannes Brahms.

During World War I, he served in the Austrian army while continuing his music studies; and on 18 March 1917, Böhm conducted for the first time, in Graz, leading the work Er und seine Schwester by Bernhard Buchbinder.

In 1927 he became Musical Director in Darmstadt. This new experience introduced him to the modern operas of Alban Berg, such as Wozzeck. At the celebrations of the 150th anniversary of Beethoven's birth in 1930, Böhm conducted Symphony No. 9, receiving excellent reviews for his performance.
