About

Karl Ferdinand Braun was a German applied physicist and inventor whose work helped establish radio communication, electronics, and television. He is remembered for introducing the tuned closed circuit and the inductive coupling between transmitter and antenna—contributions that made long‑range wireless transmission possible and directly influenced contemporaries such as Guglielmo Marconi.

In 1874 he discovered asymmetric conduction properties in metal–semiconductor junctions, leading to the first point-contact diode and anticipating the foundations of semiconductor electronics. In 1897 he built the first cathode‑ray tube—the so‑called “Braun tube”—which became the basis for the development of television and numerous applications in experimental physics.

In 1905 he invented the phased‑array antenna, a precursor to technologies such as radar, smart antennas and MIMO. He was also one of the founders of the company Telefunken, an important firm in the communications and broadcasting industry.

For his contributions to wireless telegraphy, Braun shared the 1909 Nobel Prize in Physics with Marconi; his legacy endures in telecommunications infrastructure and the development of modern electronics.
