About

Kate Millett was an American writer, artist, educator, and feminist activist, recognized as a central figure of the second wave of the feminist movement. Her most influential work, Sexual Politics (originally her doctoral dissertation), examined patriarchy as a form of domination that permeates cultural and private institutions, linking literature, the arts, and public policy to the control of female sexuality in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, Millett taught at institutions such as Waseda University, Barnard, Bryn Mawr, and UC Berkeley, and she was active in feminist organizations including the National Organization for Women as well as radical groups in New York. She also wrote on pacifism, psychiatric reform, and reproductive rights, and produced visual art and film work aimed at female audiences.

Her activism included practical initiatives such as founding a women’s artistic community and a farm, and she had a lasting impact on thinking about gender and power, contributing to debates on family, sexuality, and women’s autonomy. In 2013 she was inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame.
