About

Norodom Sihanouk was a central figure in Cambodian politics for much of the 20th century, serving as monarch, head of government and party leader. Born into the country’s two main royal houses, Norodom and Sisowath, he came to prominence in his youth and led the movement that secured Cambodia’s independence from France in the 1950s. He formally abdicated the throne to exercise executive power as prime minister and later overturned constitutional limits to retain influence over the state.

During regional upheavals—most notably the Vietnam War and the rise of the Khmer Rouge—Sihanouk moved between policies of neutrality and strategic alignments, at times collaborating with both domestic and foreign forces as circumstances demanded. Exiled after the 1970 coup, he re-emerged as head of a coalition government in exile and played a diplomatic and symbolic role in negotiations that led to the monarchy’s return and restoration in 1991.

Beyond politics, he was known for cultural pursuits: he composed music, directed films and cultivated a distinctive public persona. He abdicated again in 2004 in favor of his son, Norodom Sihamoni, and came to be revered as a patriarchal figure whose career left a controversial and complex legacy in modern Cambodian history.
