About

Edward III (House of Plantagenet), King of England from 1327 to 1377, consolidated royal authority after his father’s turbulent reign and turned the realm into one of Europe’s leading military powers. Crowned while still a teenager, he assumed personal rule by overthrowing the regent Roger Mortimer, establishing a more vigorous and centralized monarchy.

His long reign saw significant institutional developments, particularly in the evolution of Parliament and the administration of justice, even as it faced severe crises such as the Black Death. Militarily, he restored dominance over Scotland and—most notably—pressed a claim to the French throne in 1337, triggering the Hundred Years’ War.

Landmark victories at Crécy (1346) and Poitiers (1356) enhanced his prestige and led to the favorable Treaty of Brétigny, although his final years were marked by setbacks and a loss of influence due to age and ill health. Recognized by contemporaries and later historians, his legacy combines military success, governmental reform, and a central role in the political and military affairs of medieval Europe.
