About

Otto (Otto Friedrich Ludwig) was a Bavarian prince who was invited to rule newly independent Greece, occupying the throne from 1832 until his deposition in 1862. He arrived as a minor under a regency council dominated by Bavarians and assumed full powers only upon reaching majority; his reign shifted from absolute monarchy (1835–1843) to a constitutional regime after a peaceful uprising in 1843.

His reign was marked by efforts to modernize administration and urban planning: he moved the capital to Athens and promoted public works and institutions that remain part of his legacy — including the University and Polytechnic of Athens, the National Library, gardens, and palaces. However, he faced strong popular rejection for relying on foreign administrations and advisers, for electoral fraud, and for failing to resolve the kingdom’s economic fragility.

In foreign affairs, Otto aligned with the great powers, a strategy that sometimes weakened him and led to British naval blockades during the Crimean War. His marriage to Queen Amalia was childless, and after assassination attempts and growing unrest he was deposed and died in exile in Bavaria in 1867.
