About

Sigismund II Augustus was King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania, a central figure of the Jagiellon dynasty in the 16th century. He was the heir of Sigismund I and Bona Sforza and was elected king while still a child, but he only exercised real power from 1548, after his father's death. During his reign he sought to balance royal authority with the nobility (szlachta) at a time of growing pressure from the elites on the crown’s prerogatives.

His personal and political life was marked by dynastic alliances and marriages that influenced the European scene: he first married Elizabeth of Austria in a troubled, childless union; he then secretly wed Barbara Radziwiłł, a marriage that provoked intense domestic opposition; and later he formed a political alliance with Archduchess Catherine of Habsburg. These unions reflected both internal tensions and the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth’s links with the royal houses of Europe.

On religious and cultural matters, Sigismund Augustus was noted for a relatively tolerant stance, contributing to the maintenance of relative confessional peace in that multicultural polity. His reign ended in 1572; his death marked the end of the direct Jagiellon line and set off new succession disputes in the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth.
