About

John III of Portugal (1502–1557), nicknamed “the Pious,” was king from 1521 until his death and ruled over a vast, dispersed overseas empire. He inherited strategic positions from the Age of Discovery in Africa, Asia, and Brazil, and during his reign Portugal consolidated its presence in places such as Diu, Bassein, Bombay, Chaul and Macau; his reign also saw the arrival of the first Europeans in Japan in 1543.

He faced severe financial and military challenges: maintaining fortified posts in North Africa proved costly and led to the abandonment of several, while European competition and the revival of Levantine routes undermined the primacy of the Cape route. To secure dominance in the Atlantic, he initiated effective colonization of Brazil, establishing the hereditary captaincies and organizing a central government in 1548.

Deeply religious, he authorized the establishment of the Inquisition in 1536, a measure that had strong social and economic impact, contributing to the exodus of New Christian merchants and to dependence on foreign loans. His reign marked a turning point: although it expanded overseas presence, it also sowed political and financial crises whose effects persisted for subsequent generations.
