About

Pedro V (1837–1861) was King of Portugal and the Algarves from 1853 to 1861, ascending the throne as a teenager. The son of Maria II and Ferdinand II, he was under his father's regency until reaching majority and became known for a short reign notable for modernization and social concern. He presided over the inauguration of the country's first electric telegraph and the opening of the Lisbon–Carregado railway line, and he encouraged the first regular maritime connections with Angola.

With a solid education in sciences and the humanities and fluency in several languages, he engaged directly with public concerns: he supported public health efforts during cholera and yellow fever epidemics, visiting hospitals and sponsoring the creation of charitable institutions and hospitals, including the Hospital Dona Estefânia. He introduced the metric system in Portugal and founded the Curso Superior de Letras using personal donations.

A supporter of the abolition of slavery, he was involved in diplomatic incidents related to the slave trade. He married Princess Stephanie of Hohenzollern‑Sigmaringen; he died childless at 24 of typhoid fever, prompting widespread national mourning and leaving a legacy of reforms and closer ties between the monarchy and the people.
