About

Charles Emmanuel III of Savoy was King of Sardinia from 1730 to 1773, known as a monarch engaged in European conflicts and domestic reforms. A son of Victor Amadeus II, he ascended the throne after his father’s abdication and soon dealt with family attempts at intervention that ended in his predecessor’s detention and exile. Militarily, he took part in the War of the Polish Succession allied with France, gaining territories such as Milan and Novara, and later fought in the War of the Austrian Succession, with notable victories like the Battle of Assietta (1747) that helped preserve the integrity of his realms.

Throughout his reign Charles Emmanuel balanced military action with administrative initiatives: he pursued policies to strengthen the state vis‑à‑vis the Church and sought measures for economic and social modernization. In 1771 he attempted to enact a code that would have permitted peasants to acquire noble land, an initiative that was then reversed under pressure from the elites. Late in life he chose to avoid involvement in the Seven Years’ War and to concentrate on internal reforms.

His reign left a record of territorial recovery and attempts at legal and economic modernization; he was succeeded by Victor Amadeus III. He was buried in the Basilica of Superga in Turin.
