About

Friedrich August III was the last King of Saxony, reigning from 1904 until his abdication in November 1918. A career soldier, he joined the Royal Saxon Army in his youth and rose rapidly through the ranks, reaching Generalfeldmarschall in 1912; he commanded important formations, including the XII Saxon Corps, before ascending the throne.

During his reign he retained considerable popularity thanks to an unpretentious personal style and a closeness to the people; he was often seen in civilian dress and was known for anecdotes that revealed his humor and simplicity. He married Archduchess Louise of Austria; the marriage ended in a controversial divorce in 1903.

With the collapse of the German Empire and the outbreak of the German Revolution of 1918, Friedrich August chose not to repress the uprisings; he formally renounced the throne and ended the Saxon monarchy, urging the preservation of state cohesion as he withdrew to his private estates. He died in 1932 and remains a symbolic figure of Saxony’s transition from monarchy to republic.
