About

George I of Saxony (1832–1904) was King of Saxony from 1902 to 1904, a member of the House of Wettin. A son of King John I and Princess Amélie Auguste of Bavaria, he was noted for his military career: he served under his brother Albert in the campaigns of the Austro‑Prussian War (1866) and the Franco‑Prussian War, reaching the rank of Generalfeldmarschall before succeeding to the throne.

Married to Infanta Maria Anna of Braganza, a granddaughter of Queen Maria II of Portugal, George had a large family, with eight children, six of whom survived childhood, including his successor Friedrich August III. The marriage strengthened dynastic ties among European royal houses in the 19th century.

Although his reign was short—just over two years—his life illustrates the role of prince‑generals in the German monarchies of the period, balancing a military career with dynastic duties. He died in Pillnitz and was succeeded by his son, leaving primarily the legacy of dynastic continuity during a transitional phase for the German Empire.
