About
Peter II Karađorđević was the last king of Yugoslavia, ascending the throne in 1934 after the assassination of his father, Alexander I. A minor at the time, his reign was initially conducted by a regency led by Prince Paul during a period of intense internal tensions and genuine attempts at reconciliation between Serbs and Croats.
In March 1941, a pro‑British coup declared Peter of age, a move that precipitated an Axis invasion days later and forced the royal family into exile. Based in London, he headed a government in exile throughout World War II, aligned with the Allies and committed to preserving the Yugoslav state amid occupation and internal divisions.
Formally deposed by the Constituent Assembly in November 1945 with the proclamation of the republic, Peter spent the remainder of his life abroad, settling in the United States. He died prematurely in 1970; the return of his remains to the Royal Mausoleum at Oplenac in 2013 underscored the continuing significance of his figure in the monarchical and national history of the region.
