About

Krystian Zimerman is a Polish concert pianist, conductor and pedagogue, described as one of the greatest of his generation. He won the IX International Frédéric Chopin Piano Competition in 1975, beginning collaborations with the Berlin Philharmonic and conductors such as Bernstein, Boulez, Karajan and Rattle. He is known for his interpretations of Mozart, Chopin, Brahms and Beethoven.

He studied with Andrzej Jasiński at the Academy of Katowice. He won the Beethoven Competition (1973, Hradec Králové).

He made his U.S. debut with the New York Philharmonic (1979). He teaches at the Basel Academy (1996-). He founded the Polish Festival Orchestra (1999). Notable recordings include the Grieg and Schumann concertos (Karajan), Brahms (Bernstein/Rattle), and Szymanowski (2023, Gramophone).
