Kurt Magnus

About

Kurt Magnus was a jurist and a central figure in the early decades of radio and television in Germany. Trained in law at Oxford, Göttingen and Berlin, he practiced as a lawyer before focusing on the organization and management of broadcasting. In 1925 he co‑founded Reichs-Rundfunk GmbH, which operated major stations in cities such as Berlin, Hamburg, Munich and Frankfurt, and he contributed to radio program publications.

As an administrator he was notable for advocating transparency in the use of broadcasting fees, warning about the allocation of resources and about the relationship between shareholders and program production. His work made him an influential voice in the institutional development of German radio during the 1920s.

Persecuted by the Nazi regime, he endured detention and surveillance, was removed from public positions and forced into commercial work. After the Second World War he joined the regional government of Hesse as minister of Economy and Transport and returned to broadcasting as a member of the Hessischer Rundfunk council.

His name was commemorated with the establishment of the Kurt‑Magnus Prize in 1962 to recognize young professionals in public broadcasting in Germany.
