About

Lady Bird Johnson, born Claudia Alta Taylor, served as First Lady of the United States from 1963 to 1969 as the wife of President Lyndon B. Johnson. A native of Texas, she demonstrated administrative and business acumen: she invested in radio and television stations, whose proceeds helped stabilize the family’s finances and made it possible to support her husband’s political campaigns.

In the White House she took an unusually active public role for a First Lady, engaging directly with Congress, maintaining her own press staff, and campaigning on behalf of the president. Her institutional involvement expanded the public role of the First Lady in American politics.

Lady Bird was especially known for her vigorous advocacy of urban beautification and highway landscaping, popularizing the idea that well-planned green spaces promote social well-being. Federal legislation on highway beautification was informally dubbed the “Lady Bird Bill.”

For her civic work and environmental and cultural legacy, she received prominent civilian honors, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Congressional Gold Medal.
