In 2012 he was permanently banned and stripped of all results obtained since August 1998 for the use and distribution of biochemical doping.
As a consequence, he lost the seven Tour de France titles he had won between 1999 and 2005 after returning to competition following a diagnosis of testicular cancer.
In November 2012, Sports Illustrated published a list of the most unsportsmanlike athletes of the year. The cyclist ranked first. Ten years earlier, the magazine had awarded him the Fair Play ('jogo limpo') trophy for his sporting values.
