About
Lance Allan Ito is a retired American judge who gained national prominence by presiding over the criminal trial of O. J. Simpson in 1995 in the Superior Court of Los Angeles County. A law graduate of the Boalt School of Law at the University of California, Berkeley, Ito began his career in the Los Angeles district attorney’s office, working in units focused on gang suppression and organized crime before being appointed to the bench in the 1980s.
Over the course of his career he presided over several high-profile trials, including cases involving the Menendez brothers and financier Charles H. Keating Jr.; portions of the Keating sentence were later overturned on procedural grounds. In 1992 he was named Judge of the Year by the Los Angeles County Bar Association.
The Simpson trial placed Ito at the center of public debate over television coverage of court proceedings and judicial conduct; he faced criticism for his handling of recesses and the press and for questions about impartiality. After retiring, his role in the case became a cultural reference, portrayed in numerous television dramas and documentaries.
